Missoula Urban Indian Health Center HPDP Program Goal

To Enhance Universal Nutrition and Physical Activity initiatives targeting Missoula community American Indian/Alaska Native families. Utilizing lifestyle intervention strategies led by an interdisciplinary team. Strategies will include increased physical activity, nutrition education, behavioral health, and social wellness support with a culturally relevant emphasis.

The HPDP Program uses evidence-based and promising strategies with the implementation of Restoring Our Relationships Wellness Series (ROR), and is gearing up for its fourth year. The implementation of best practices, utilizing lifestyle intervention strategies, with outcome based objectives and key measures will drive program efficacy into the next year.

The ROR interdisciplinary team’s mission is to improve health and behavioral health care, support lifestyle changes, and incorporate cultural components. This team is set to work together enhancing the ROR as part of the “Healthy Weight for Life” campaign and continues to incorporate Youth Staying Healthy, Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools, Balancing Your Life and Diabetes, and Group Lifestyle Balance (DPP) curriculums; Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) with behavioral, social, cultural prevention components including the Physical Activity Kit (PAK). The team encourages a lifestyle change connecting the spiritual, emotional, mental, social and physical aspects of each individual, influencing Health Promotion and Disease Prevention strategies. It is with an understanding of this balance that MUIHC strives to provide quality care for the Missoula’s AI/AN community.

One Service Learning component of ROR is the implementation and continuation of the community garden, in partnership with the Special Diabetes Program for Indians and Health program; which will be used to help reconnect MUIHC clients to the role of indigenous food systems in living healthy lifestyles.
